Curriculum and Activities

For the next couple of weeks we will be focusing on some of the “Busy People” in our community.  We will talk about, sing about, and read about the mail carrier, dentist, health care professionals, veterinarian (MWF only), firefighter, police officer, carpenter, chef, and hairdresser (MWF only).  Our budding dentists will have an opportunity to brush, floss, and examine an actual dental model.  Our exploration of the carpenter will bring out the workbench with real hand tools, nails, and wood. The “Long School Salon” has just opened, complete with hair styling and manicure opportunities.  Right next door to the salon you will soon find the “Long School Pizzeria” with our students performing as cooks, servers, cashiers, and customers…the math and literacy possibilities are endless!

 HELP Needed!

Please, please, please insist that your child wear their gym shoes in school.  If they come into class with their gym shoes on they will be ready for whatever large motor activity is scheduled for the day.

Remember…please try to leave personal toys at home or in the car.  We cannot guarantee the safety of items left in the hallway.

We are still having trouble with students sharing chapsticks.  Please make sure your child does not come to school with a chapstick in their pocket.

Preschool Registration Will Soon Be Underway

Registration for the 2008/09 school year will soon be underway.  Families currently enrolled in our programs will have until April 9th to pre-register ahead of the general public.  Coupons will soon be available for our families to pre-register at a reduced price.   Please tell your friends and neighbors that registration for new students we begin at our annual Early Childhood Open House being held on Thursday, April 10th from 6:30pm to 8pm.  New families can visit our classroom, meet the teachers, and register their child at that time.

Cold and Flu Season

Now that the cold and flu season has arrived we remind you of our illness policies.  If you child is running a fever, vomiting, or has diarrhea our policy states that all of these symptoms should be gone for at least 24 hours before a student can be sent back to class.  Giving Tylenol may relieve symptoms, but does not mean that a temperature is gone or that your child is not contagious.  Please use your best adult judgment even when a child insists that they are fine.

Cold Weather Wear

Two notes of concern about winter weather wear…  Please make sure that your child has a hat and mittens at all times.  When the days are dry we will continue to try to get out to the playground throughout the winter.  Additionally, we ask that your child please NOT WEAR BOOTS IN THE CLASSROOM.  Please be sure to bring shoes for your child to wear in class on snowy days.  Since our room is used for multiple classes we make a special effort to keep our floor and carpets dry.  Thanks for helping us out with this matter.

Songs and Fingerplay

I have a little toothbrush

I hold it very tight

I brush my teeth each morning

And I brush them every night.

(pretend to spit)

Brush, brush, brush your teeth

Brush them everyday

Up and down, and round and round

Scrub the germs away.

(tune: Row, Row, Row Your Boat)

I want to be a firefighter on a great big fire truck

I’ll drive fast to the fire and I won’t get stuck

I’ll wear my hat and what do you think

I’ll put the fire out quick as a wink!

(make a spraying water noise)

When my head hurts quite a bit

And when my tummy ‘s sick

My _______ calls the doctor up

And says we’re coming quick.

Sometimes they give me medicine

Sometimes I get a shot

Which do I like the best you ask?

I like the lollipop! (Tune: Yankee Doodle)
