Long Recycling is Moving Forward!

Long School has been actively recycling for several years but now our Student Recycling Committee is getting some additional support from the City of Dearborn and The Ecology Center. Through the efforts of a collaborative committee, Long School received new classroom recycling boxes and two more recycling bins. We will also be getting weekly pick-up at Long School (no more ‘borrowing’ neighbors curbs). The student committee will be closely monitoring the amount of recycling and ensuring that only recyclable items are placed in the bins. Long School was selected, along with Bryant Middle School, as a pilot for this program which the City and District hope to expand to more schools next year.

Writers and Music Support Reading at Long

The value and diversity of reading has been particularly emphasized at Long School this week. On Wednesday, Johnathan Rand, author of the Michigan and American Chillers series, visited Long and shared many of his experiences including one of his favorite quotes “Reading isn’t something you do, Reading is a place that you go. Books don’t have covers, they have doors.” Wow, that’s deep. In addition, our music teachers incorporated reading and original compositions into the pieces students performed during their concert on Thursday. We finished the week with a ‘Sit in and Read’ activity to celebrate our groovy Reading Month.

Lowrey Carolers Come Calling at Long

Students involved in the afterschool music program at Lowrey School visited Long School today and entertained us with their caroling. Under the direction of music teacher, Ashley Helper and with the assistance of teacher, Rana Hassna, 44 students in grades 4 and 5 rode the bus to Long and performed several songs for students in first, second and third grades. Everyone enjoyed the event and we are very thankful to Ms. Helper for including Long School in the singers’ itinerary.

There’s Snow Place Like Long!

Snow place like Long

Our School Culture Committee has transformed the main hallway into a Winter Wonderland. The fence that once held pumpkins is now home to snowmen and snow women enthusiastically displaying their math knowledge. Every student is contributing in their own unique way. Stop by and ask your child to point out his or her snowman.
