Long School Recycling Committee wants you to help us keep our environment healthy by remembering the 3 Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The committee met with representatives from Recycle Ann Arbor to learn more about keeping contamination out of our recycling. We learned that paper towel, tissues and plastic bags cannot be recycled as the recycling facility used by Dearborn is not able to process them. More helpful tips to come!

The upcoming U of M vs State game has brought out some very strong opinions from students, parents and staff at Long. While the fifth grade penny wars is always a fun and profitable event, this year has been exceptional. Various flags and mascots ‘mysteriously’ appeared in several classrooms today. Students were furiously writing their opinions and voting for their choice. Parents, students and staff all contributed generously to the penny wars jars in support of their team. Along with our first Popcorn Friday, it was a great way to end the week and as one fifth grader was heard to say, “either way, we win”.
On Wednesday, Oct. 4, Long School will once again participate in International Walk to School Day. Our students and parents will join with others throughout the world in supporting a healthy lifestyle by walking to school. Staff members will be outdoors helping cross everyone safely and promoting this worthwhile event. Students that participate will sign a Walk to School Day banner that will hang in the school hall. Gather up all the students in your neighborhood and get involved!
The Long School community has been exploring the topic of respect for the past few weeks. Students have watched informative videos, discussed what respect is/ isn’t and practiced showing respect throughout the school. They learned that respect is showing others they are important by what you say and do. The three big ideas they focused on are:
Treat others right
Make smart choices
Maximize your potential
Classes are joining together to complete a celebration craft activity. These elephants are a symbol of respect because elephants protect their families and show respect to older herd members.
As our community comes back together and we welcome many new faces, we are focused on building closer relationships, between adults and students as well as among students. Classrooms at Long started by having teachers and students create ‘Me Bags’. Students and teachers brought several items to share with their class that represent who they are and what they value. We will continue with many such activities as we explore our first Core Essential Values topic of Respect.
