Last Bell of the School Year

What a school year this has been! Thanks to each and every one of you for all you have done to keep the learning going. Just to make it ‘official’, at 11:45 on Thursday, June 11, we will ring the final bell for the school year. The Long School staff and community would like an opportunity to say goodbye and wish everyone a safe summer. Our staff will be outside on the front lawn of the school from 11:45 to 12:00, socially distanced and wearing masks. Families may wish to drive by to wave and say goodbye to teachers and staff. Bikers and walkers are welcome but we ask that you remain on the public sidewalk and remain socially distanced.

Remember that even though the school year may be ending, the learning never stops. We will be sharing many suggestions and resources to support our students throughout the summer. Stay healthy, stay safe!

Parent Survey Regarding School Opening

The State, and our District, have begun the complicated and detailed discussion on the possible reopening of schools for the 2020-21 school year. These discussions will involve experts in instruction, operations, sanitation, transportation, food service, athletics, and many other areas that are part of operating a school district. Please know that any plans developed by the Dearborn Public Schools will need to adhere to directives and Executive Orders issued by the Governor.

Your feedback is required and valued in leading these plans at the district level. Please respond to the survey by June 12, 2020. Please keep an eye out for additional parent surveys in the near future.

For translation assistance, parents may call 313-580-2532 Monday June 8th through Friday June 12th 8:30a.m. through 4:30p.m.

Distribution of Student Belongings

We will distribute student belongings on Tuesday, June 2 and Thursday, June 4 from 10:00 to 1:00 in the student drop off zone on New York Street. At this time, we will also collect any Library books or classroom books. We will not collect chrome books. These will stay with families for now and we will provide some resources for students to use during the summer. Any medications, inhalers, or epipens may also be signed out at this time.

Assignment Completion

Please remember that according to our Continuity of Learning Plan, students should be completing assigned work and submitting it to their teacher. Teachers will be completing grades based on participation in learning activities and accuracy of responses.

Elementary Assessment and Grading Guidelines

For this marking period, students will receive feedback on weekly assignments in the form of narrative comments.

  • Meeting:  regularly submitted work and attended check-ins
    • Accuracy of work assessed on standards/graded
    • High participation
  • Progressing:  Submitted most assignments and attended some of the check-ins
  • Limited Participation:  little or no participation due to circumstances shared with teacher

Be sure to keep in touch with your child’s teacher to let them know of any reasons for non-completion of assigned work and to work out a solution which helps your child continue to learn. Students still have time to complete any outstanding work.

Food Distribution Schedule Update

Dearborn Public Schools families are reminded that the meal distribution schedule will have a few changes starting the week of May 18 – the week before Memorial Day.

Because schools were scheduled to be closed on Friday and Monday for Memorial Day weekend, there will be no food distribution on May 22 and 25.

Meal distributions will still occur on Monday May 18 and on Wednesday May 20. The May 20 distribution will include breakfasts and lunches for a full week, so families should be prepared to carry the larger quantity, including a half gallon of milk per student.

Through May 20 pickup times will continue to be later at four locations. Fordson High School, Woodworth Middle School, Salina Intermediate and McCollough Elementary will distribute meals from noon to 2 p.m.

Long Elementary, Dearborn High School, Edsel Ford High School and Smith Middle School will hand out meals from 10 a.m. to noon.

The week after Memorial Day, meal distribution will go back to 10 a.m. to noon at all locations. Meals that week will be distributed on Wednesday, May 27 and Friday, May 29.

Dearborn Public Schools has been providing 65,000 grab-and-go meals a week for our students.

One person can pick up food for any student living in the home. The child does not need to attend that school. Each bag contains breakfast and lunch for the days until the next pickup.

The grab-and-go meals are provided free to families through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s School Lunch Program. Through the program, Dearborn Public Schools offered free lunch and breakfast to all kindergarten to 12th grade students before schools were closed to slow the spread of novel coronavirus.

Meal distribution schedule:

May 11, 13, 15, 18 and 20

Meals distributed from 10 a.m. to noon at Long Elementary, Dearborn High School, Edsel Ford High School and Smith Middle School and from noon to 2 p.m. at Fordson High School, Woodworth Middle School, Salina Intermediate and McCollough Elementary.

NO DISTRIBUTIONS MAY 22 AND 25

May 27 and 29 and June 1, 3, 5, 8 and 10

Meals distributed from 10 a.m. to noon at all locations.

Long School Kindergarten Round Up

We would like to welcome our incoming kindergarteners and their parents to Long Elementary School. While we may not be able to have a traditional Kindergarten Round Up, we wanted to share some information that may be useful as you and your child prepare to enter Kindergarten this fall. We are looking forward to working with you as your child begins the next phase of their education.
